Chungnam Maritime Science High School to Launch State-of-the-Art Training Ship 'Haenuri' in 2026
Ministry of Education, Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, and 5 Provincial Education Offices Collaborate... Integrated Ship Safety Management Education with 42 Billion Won Investment Begins
Chungnam Provincial Office of Education (Superintendent Kim Ji-cheol) held a commissioning ceremony for the national maritime and fisheries high school joint training ship at Busan Maritime Police Station Wharf on Friday, December 12. The training ship 'Haenuri,' which completed construction this year, will begin full operation at Chungnam Maritime Science High School starting in 2026.
'Haenuri' was promoted as a joint project through an agreement signed in 2022 between five provincial education offices (Chungnam, Incheon, Jeollanam, Gyeongbuk, and Gyeongnam) including Chungnam Provincial Office of Education, the Ministry of Education, and the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries.
'Haenuri,' measuring 3,206 tons, can accommodate up to 110 people. The ship is designed to provide integrated education on all aspects of ship operations including fishing practice, navigation management, and ship safety management. Beginning in 2026, students in the Department of Seafaring at Chungnam Maritime Science High School (Marine Industry Convergence Department and Power Control Systems Department) will receive practice-oriented education in environments similar to actual maritime fields for three weeks across four semesters after admission.
Total construction costs reached 42 billion won. The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries covered 50 percent, while the Ministry of Education and five provincial education offices shared the remaining 50 percent. Operating costs from 2026 onward will be jointly shared by the five provincial education offices.
"Students will grow into future human resources leading Korea's maritime and fisheries industry through practical training in a safe environment, and we will continue to pay close attention," said Jeon Young-bae, director of the Future Talent Division at Chungnam Provincial Office of Education.
