아산시(시장 오세현)가 송악면 거산리 산 56-11번지 일원에 공설 자연장지 조성공사 착공했다.

조성 부지 32,280㎡에 잔디형 자연장지 9,000기를 안치한다. 국가유공자 전용 장지 834기, 산분 추모시설, 산분장 공간을 별도 마련한다. 총사업비 약 58억 원이며 2027년 3월 준공 목표다.

아산시 기존 공설 봉안당 포화에 대비해 2022년 11월 기본계획 수립했다. 지역주민 반대로 사업이 일시 지연되었으나, 2024년 5월 주민지원계획 수립 및 반대추진위원회와의 협약 체결로 갈등 해소했다.

자연장은 화장한 유골의 골분을 수목·화초·잔디 주변에 묻어 자연으로 돌아가도록 하는 장례 방식이다. 봉분이나 석물(비석) 설치하지 않아 자연 훼손을 최소화하는 친환경 문화다.

공설장사시설 확충사업 전체에 총 286억 원 투입된다. 봉안당 3만 2,548기, 자연장지 9,000기 등 총 4만 1,548기 확충 예정이다. 봉안당 건립사업은 2026년 4월 착공 목표다.

아산시 관계자는 "이번 자연장지 조성을 통해 고인 추모할 수 있는 친환경적이고 품격 있는 장사 공간 마련하겠다"고 밝혔다.

Asan City (Mayor Oh Se-hyun) launched construction of a municipal natural burial ground at San 56-11, Geosan-ri, Songak-myeon.

The 32,280㎡ site accommodates 9,000 lots of grass-type natural burial grounds. City provides separate space for 834 national merit sites, ashes scattering memorial facilities, and ashes scattering areas. Total project cost stands at approximately 5.8 billion won with target completion set for March 2027.

Asan City established the basic plan in November 2022 to prepare for saturation of existing municipal columbarium. Regional resident opposition temporarily delayed the project. City resolved conflict by establishing resident support plan in May 2024 and signing agreement with opposition committee.

Natural burial involves burying cremated remains' ashes around trees, flowers, and grass to return remains to nature. The method does not require burial mounds or stone monuments, thus minimizing environmental damage through eco-friendly funeral practice.

Total 286 billion won investment allocated for entire municipal funeral facility expansion project. Project expands total 41,548 lots including 32,548 columbarium lots and 9,000 natural burial lots. Columbarium construction targets April 2026 groundbreaking.

Asan City official stated, "Through this natural burial ground project, city provides an eco-friendly and dignified space to commemorate the deceased."
