보은군이 운영해 온 원어민 영어 수업이 지난 4일 마지막 수업을 끝으로 폐지됐다. 보은군은 교육발전특구 시범사업으로 지난 9월 9일부터 보은군립도서관에서 주 2회(화·목) 원어민 영어 수업을 운영했다. 67세 반, 초12반, 초3~4반 등 3개 반으로 나눠 30여 명이 수강료 3만원에 수업을 받았다.

보은군 관계자는 "독서문화증진이 목적인 도서관에서 영어교실 운영이 적절하지 않다는 내부 검토 결과"라며 "내년 준공될 온누리플랫폼 내 영어교육센터를 이용해야 할 것"이라고 밝혔다. 온누리플랫폼은 내년 3월 준공식 후 실질 개관까지 두세 달이 더 소요될 전망이다.

학부모들은 "보은은 원어민 수업이 가능한 사설학원이 없다"며 "영어교육센터 개관 전까지 군립도서관에서 수업을 계속해 달라"고 요구하고 있다.

Months-long gap inevitable until Onnuri Platform opens

Boeun County ended its native English classes on December 4. The county operated classes twice weekly (Tuesdays and Thursdays) at Boeun County Library since September 9 as part of an Education Development Zone pilot project. About 30 students in three groups (ages 6-7, grades 1-2, grades 3-4) attended for a 30,000 won fee.

A county official explained, "Internal review determined English classes were not appropriate for a library focused on reading culture promotion." The official added students should use the English Education Center in Onnuri Platform, scheduled for completion next year. The platform's March groundbreaking ceremony will be followed by two to three more months before actual opening.

Parents are demanding continued classes at the library until the center opens, stating "Boeun has no private academies offering native English instruction."
